SOCIO ECONOMIC CONTRIBUTION OF TOURISM TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to examine the impact of socio-economic contribution of tourism development in the hospitality industry, Ilorin, kwara State. Specifically, the study aimed at determining whether tourism has been of great contribution to the socio economic development to the hospitality industry, if employment opportunity relate with tourism development in Kwara State, if tourism development of hospitality industry has negatively or positively affected or impacted the socio-economic state of the state,  Kwara state, how greatly enhance tourism development in hospitality industry, ways, Nigeria could redeem her image in order  to attract an increased tourist arrival rate, and how Nigerians could be encouraged to patronize their local tourism industry and also increase her GDP as contribution from the tourism sector. The study employed the survey descriptive research design. A total of 150 responses were validated from the survey. From the responses obtained and analysed, the findings revealed thatthere is a significant relationship between tourism development and hospitality industry in Kwara state, there is a significant relationship between tourism and socioeconomic development of Kwara state, and there is a significant relationship between tourism in Kwara state and employment opportunities. The study recommend Nigeria must take the issue of tourism planning and implementation very seriously and urgently too. More so, in order for tourism to succeed in Nigeria, there must be close cooperation between various levels of government (Federal, state & LGA) as well as the private sector.
